Churchill, Manitoba, is celebrated as one of the world’s top destinations for experiencing the awe-inspiring beluga whales. Nestled on the western shore of Hudson Bay at the mouth of the Churchill River, this small town comes alive every summer as thousands of beluga whales migrate to the area.

More than 3,000 beluga whales gather annually in the Churchill River estuary and nearby waters. These playful and inquisitive marine mammals are drawn to the region’s shallow, warm waters, which provide the ideal environment for feeding, molting, and caring for their young. Churchill’s remarkable concentration of belugas makes it one of the best and most unique places to observe them in their natural habitat.

For many, visiting Churchill to witness this natural wonder in person can be challenging due to its remote location and associated costs. The live broadcasting beluga boat changes everything—offering anyone with internet access the chance to experience the whales up close, as though they were swimming alongside them underwater. The project presented immense challenges and complex logistics. The HDOnTap team spent weeks in Del Mar, California, meticulously designing and fabricating the controllable underwater camera and mount. Once completed, the components were shipped to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, for assembly in the Frontiers North maintenance shop.
