Nestled between Bristol Bay and the Bering Sea, the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary (WISGS) encompasses seven small islands and surrounding waters, including the renowned Round Island. Established in 1960, WISGS aims to protect one of North America's largest Pacific Walrus haulout sites. Due to its fragile ecosystem, only a limited number of visitors receive permits to experience this enchanting island each year. In 2015, when Explore.org offered the chance to install live cams around the island, HDOnTap eagerly accepted, enabling people worldwide to observe the walrus in their natural habitat.

Off-Grid Power, Satellite Uplink, Wireless Networking, and Self-Cleaning Camera Systems—installed on a remote, uneven island. The challenge was immense, and the logistics were complex. The HDOnTap team spent months preparing the hardware in Del Mar, California, before shipping everything to Dillingham, Alaska, where assembly began in a hangar. Once assembled, the equipment was transported to the island via helicopter sling loads. Each year, HDOnTap staff return to the island to bring the cameras back online and perform various upgrades. You can enjoy these live cams on Explore.org.
